Essential App Toolkit

Rides: Install Grab and Bolt immediately. Maxim is great for budget rides.

Food: Grab Food and LINE MAN are the daily drivers.

Chat: LINE is non-negotiable for talking to landlords, shops, and agents.

Money: PromptPay (via Thai bank) or TrueMoney (passport-friendly) for cashless payments.

When I first landed in Chiang Mai, I realized a handful of apps makes daily life much smoother. Here is my practical split by category — rides and delivery first, then chat, housing, language, travel inside the country, payments, and shopping.

Which apps should I use for rides and food?

Ride apps are crowded here. My usual lineup is Grab, Bolt, Maxim, and inDrive.

• Grab is my default: widely available, but I've seen it surge hard at rush hour and in high season. (If you ever get into a scooter accident while riding Grab, check out my guide to handling a motorcycle accident in Chiang Mai.)
• Bolt pricing swings a lot depending on demand — I always compare it with Grab before confirming.
• Maxim is often the cheapest option when I can find a driver nearby.
• inDrive is handy for bigger moves; you will see plenty of pickups and red songthaews on there.

For food, I find Grab and LINE MAN cover most needs.

• LINE MAN skews toward local stalls and smaller eateries; I've noticed delivery fees are often lower than Grab.
• Grab Food lists more restaurants overall and usually has more riders online — I use it when I want variety or faster pickup.

LINE MAN also offers rides in some areas, though foreigners rarely rely on it compared with Grab or Bolt.

Bolt, Maxim, and inDrive are transport-only — no meal delivery inside those apps.

How do I find a place and talk to locals?

Thailand runs on LINE. Every agent and landlord I've met lives there; WhatsApp shows up sometimes, but LINE is the main lane.

For finding a place, here is what I use:

1. Facebook groups and Marketplace remain the most live channel — I've found prices and listings track reality better because agents post in real time.
2. DDproperty, RentHub, and similar portals help me browse condos and apartments, but I've noticed listings often go stale. Treat them as a map, not gospel.
3. WhatsApp rental groups are active — expect plenty of agents.

When I see something promising on a portal, I open Google Maps, find the building’s phone, and call for today’s price. That beats trusting an old screenshot.

If nothing clicks yet, pick one agent you trust and let them show you a few blocks — often faster than scrolling alone.

Language

Not everyone you deal with — banks, juristic offices, utilities — will be comfortable in English. For leases, fees, and anything official, use Google Translate or another translator app so meaning stays precise and arguments do not start from a misunderstanding.

Ground travel beyond Chiang Mai

If you are moving around Thailand without flying, bookmark redBus (bus bookings) and 12Go (buses, trains, and combined routes). Compare times and operators before you pay.

Payments

The mainstream flow is PromptPay QR — scan from any Thai banking app. Some shops take cards; many small places do not. If you have no local bank yet, carry cash until you do.

TrueMoney is worth serious consideration when opening a proper Thai bank account is not realistic yet:

• Sign-up is passport-based; top up at 7-Eleven or TrueMoney kiosks (you need a Thai mobile number).
• Once funded, you can scan PromptPay QR codes almost everywhere — restaurants, street stalls, splitting bills with friends — without digging for coins.
• Many people use it for rent handoffs and for scanning utility or government bills when those arrive as pay slips.

Shopping online

For e-commerce, Shopee and Lazada are the two giants — compare prices and shipping before you commit.

Before you fly vs after your SIM

Install Grab, Google Maps, and a translator before you leave — they work on Wi‑Fi at the airport. Add LINE, TrueMoney or your bank’s Thai app, and housing/social apps once you have a local phone number, since OTPs and rider chat usually need it.
